What do NASA and one of the world’s most famous fashion houses have in common?
When headlines announced that Prada was helping develop NASA’s next lunar spacesuit, the internet reacted exactly as you’d expect. Designer moon boots. Luxury space fashion. Astronauts strutting across the Moon like it was a runway in Milan.
It was funny. It was also missing the real story.
Prada isn’t designing a fashionable spacesuit. It’s helping Axiom Space solve a genuine engineering challenge: how do you keep an astronaut comfortable, productive, and safe while working for hours inside a sealed spacecraft worn like clothing?
A Spacesuit Is More Than Clothing
Modern lunar spacesuits are personal spacecraft. They provide oxygen, maintain pressure, regulate temperature, remove carbon dioxide, protect against the lunar environment, and still allow astronauts to work efficiently on the Moon.
Hidden beneath the outer suit is the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG). It circulates cool water to remove excess body heat while a separate ventilation system supports breathing. The latest design also includes redundant cooling loops for additional safety during long moonwalks.
