On November 11th, 2019, Mercury, our innermost planet, passed between the Sun and Earth in a way that allowed us to see Mercury with the Sun in the background. Commonly referred to as a “transit”, this event provided an opportunity for people to look at Mercury as it passed in front of the sun with telescopes that are equipped with solar filters. The Rochester Astronomy Club set up telescopes at Mayo High School, Rochester, Minnesota, to allow students to witness this rare event. Even though the event ended early because of snow, we did have the chance to observe the transit before the sky clouded over.
